Although I’ve been enjoying the shooting sports for some time now, a more organized level of training and shooting is something that is very new to me. Admittedly, although I was excited with the opportunity to take a higher level of training, I was also very nervous and was well outside my comfort zone.
Reflecting back, it was a fantastic weekend. Not only did I walk away with many new skill-sets, but I had a hell of a fun time doing it.
A small class size allowed for much one-on-one instruction, advice, and conversation with everyone involved.
After providing us with some solid fundamentals which included safety protocols and equipment maintenance, we quickly hit the range. The pistol bay at the Longest Mile became our home and centre of focus for the next two days.
Multiple free-standing targets were setup throughout the range in which Rob taught and drilled various fundamentals and techniques. After becoming comfortable with basic rifle and pistol handling, Rob introduced concepts such as shooting from coverage, moving while engaging a target, transitioning from rifle to pistol, and much, much more.
What an absolute adrenaline rush!
Admittedly, having never before experienced this type of shooting, there were times when I felt a little awkward. That being said, Rob was there right there at our side to talk us through the various exercises and help put us at ease.
Finally, we were put through a qualification round in which to demonstrate the culmination of the various drills we learned over the course of the weekend. If you had shown me what we were about to do before the start of the course, I would have told you there’s no way in hell I was going to be able to do any of it. And hit the target a high percentage of the time. And while ‘on the clock’.
But if you had seen the smiles on our faces at the conclusion of the course, you’d know we accomplished exactly that. Thanks, Rob.Shooters of any level who are looking at adding a new dimension to their range time or getting into competition shooting will be well served.
